Some good twists and a warm and exciting end await readers of this well written 'sugar and spice' story.  --all-review.co.uk/book-reviews Ariana’s Pride is an historical romance set during the Wars of the Roses. The story commences shortly after the Battle of Barnet where Warwick The Kingmaker was killed and Edward IV has just taken his throne back from the mad king, Henry VI. This one decisive battle affected the lives and attitudes of Ariana and Jeremy.

Ariana Devoe is the willful and arrogant daughter of Earl William. What happens when she finds that she has lost her home and family? Will she lose her heart, too, as she struggles to reach the elderly Baron to whom her father has promised her? Or will she throw away her chance to avenge her father’s death and regain her titles and estates to be with the dashing Jeremy?

Jeremy Gowen has lived most of his life in the Earl’s stables, but does not intend to end his days there. Aided by the stablemaster, once a soldier in the King’s service, Jeremy secretly learns horsemanship and sword fighting.

After the attack on her father’s castle, Jeremy finds Lady Ariana, lost and alone. He promises to take her to the Baron, but as their journey progresses, he is no longer willing to turn the woman he loves over to another man. Jeremy holds the secret which could make Ariana his, but he wants her to love him for his own sake.

17 of 22 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars An auspicious debut, May 11, 2009 This review is from: Ariana's Pride (Kindle Edition) It's always fun to discover a talented new author and for me, Margaret Lake is my latest. Ariana's Pride is her first novel; it is an auspicious debut.

At its core, this is a travel saga, telling the story of Lady Ariana Devoe and Jeremy as they make their way, mostly on foot, from her father's castle, after it has been captured in a short, fierce battle, to the estate of the Baron of Pemdale, to whom Ariana is betrothed. As with any journey, lots of things happen, both good and bad. Lake keeps the story moving and the reader guessing about what is in store for the two main characters. This is really Ariana and Jeremy's story; while secondary characters appear throughout, some more well written than others, the focus is always on the protagonists.

The story was well written with lots of historical detail, which I always enjoy. There were two very small plot "flubs" which I think could have been tweaked and would have taken the book from "very good" to "great" (and the reason for my 4 star rating instead of 5). Lake seems to be a careful and meticulous author and I imagine that she will learn from this--I would be surprised to see the same thing happening in subsequent offerings.

And I do hope there are subsequent offerings! As I said above, this is a wonderful debut novel from a talented author. I look forward to reading more from Margaret Lake. Adriana's Pride: recommended.

This book is a page turner in the best sence. It is well researched and written. No time wasted in reading this. Of course it is also set in my favorite period of English history; The War of the Roses. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible first book, May 14, 2009 This review is from: Ariana's Pride (Kindle Edition) I enjoyed this book very much. And I am not a reader of Romance novels. I don't think this book is. It is a historical novel with a romance in it. The characterizations are excellent. Ms. Lake presents the main two characters and they are less than 100% likable. However as they overcome hardships and meet new challenges in a very short period of time, they grow-up. And they become much more likable to each other as well as to the reader.
I give this book 5 stars because is is so good for a first book.
And I look forward to more from this author and will purchase subsequent offerings.

Reading has always been my favorite activity, even as a child. I've been downsizing and have probably donated 5,000 books in the past several years. I still have seven book cases crammed full and I can't even count how many on my Kindle.

My other passion is history, especially English History. I think my interest really began when I read "Catherine" by Anya Seton. When the inspiration came to write my first book, I naturally gravitated to the Wars of the Roses because of that book.

My favorite author is Susan Howatch, my favorite book is "Outlander" and my favorite series is Harry Potter. I lead a Harry Potter book club at the elementary school and help with the chess club.

I'm still waiting for the rescue kitty lady to find me a kitty I can rescue.
